UVA PROVINCE
Uva Province is one of the 9 provinces of Sri Lanka. It is a beautiful area and is also known as Wellassa. Uva Province has the second lowest population in Sri Lanka at 1,259,900 (2012).
It is bordered by the Eastern, Southern and Central Provinces. Badulla is the capital city of the Uva Province which consists of two districts namely Badulla District and Moneragala District. The Uva Province has several tourist attractions, most notably Dunhinda Falls, Diyaluma Falls, Rawana Falls, Yala National Park and Galoya National Park. The Mahaweli River, Menik River, Senanayake Sea and Maduru Oya Reservoir are the main water sources.
* Location
Uva Province is a beautiful land adjoining the central highlands of Sri Lanka. Areas such as Girandurukotte, Mahiyanganaya, Meegahakiula in the north, rice mills in Monaragala and Wellawaya in the east, cold mountains such as Bandarawela and Haputale in the south and Kalupahana, Hakkala and Ohiya in the west. Uva Province is a province of Wellassa in the Monaragala District which consists of hundreds of thousands of areas, including sugarcane and maize cultivation areas, Bandarawela Haputale area in the central hills and potato and other vegetable growing areas. Uva Province has a good geological location with many major waterfalls, water sources and many natural parks.

Many areas in the Uva Province are still rich in rural culture. Mahiyangana Sacred Area, Muthiyangana Sacred Area, Kataragama Sacred Area, Aboriginal Dambana, Kataragama Devalaya, Bandarawela Passara Haputale Estate Temples etc. where the Buddha was worshiped are the products of the culture of the Uva Province.
* History
Uva Province has a very long history. Areas such as Ravana Ella, King Ravana's Herbal Garden or Hakgala, Ravana's Cave, Divurumwela Rajamaha Viharaya where Goddess Sita's revelation and Sthripura Tunnel Complex are located in the Uva Province are associated with the Ramayana and Ravana stories. It is also believed that King Ravana based his kingdom on Badulla.
The first visit of the Lord Buddha to Sri Lanka after the time of Ravana was to Mahiyangana. It is noteworthy that the beginning of the Mahavamsa is also based on this event. Three of the 16 temples (Mahiyanganaya, Muthiyangana, Kataragama) which are considered to be the sixteenth place where the feet of the Buddha were touched are located in the Uva Province. One of the four main Saman Devalayas dedicated to Sri Sumana Saman is located near the Mahiyangana sacred area in the Uva Province to protect the Sri Padasthana. The first stupa built in Sri Lanka is in the Mahiyangana sacred area in the Uva Province.
Among the oldest buildings and places of worship in the Uva Province are the Mahiyangana Sacred Area, the Kataragama Sacred Area, the Muthiyangana Sacred Area, the Maligawila Sacred Area and the Royal Palace ruled by a local king, the Yudaganawa organized by King Dutugemunu Sena and its ancient Dagaba, Dowa Raja Maha Viharaya, Bogoda Lee Bridge etc. The past heritage of the province is well known.
1818 was the Wellassa Rebellion that affected the whole of Sri Lanka and centered on the Uva Province. Keppetipola of Monarawila took the lead in this battle.
*Natural Aesthetics
Uva Province is an area of great natural beauty. Hakgala Strict Nature Reserve, Ohiya Reserve, Nilgala Sanctuary, Dunhida, Diyaluma, Ravana Falls, Bomburu Falls, Surathali Falls, Mana Falls, Rawan Falls and the highest waterfall in Sri Lanka, Bambara Kanda Falls, Namunukula, Nayabedabedda Rahangala etc. Are designs. The Uva Province also has tourist cities such as Badulla, Bandarawela and Haputale which are frequented by tourists.
