CHRISTMAS

Catholics around the world celebrated the glorious birth of Jesus Christ yesterday (25).

Christmas is celebrated not only by Christians but also by people of other religions as a cultural event.  It is a festival celebrated all over the world. About 7% of the total population of Sri Lanka worships in Catholic churches across the country on December 24 at 12 midnight and on the morning of December 25.

The Chief Christmas Service of the Archdiocese of Colombo was held at 12.00 noon on December 24 at St. Anthony's Church, Mangroves, Moratuwa under the patronage of His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith, Archbishop of Colombo.

Christmas, or the birth of Jesus Christ, is considered by Catholics to be a holy time that brings peace and happiness to all the world. Christians believe that Jesus, known as the Messiah or Chosen One, was born of a virgin named Mary.  The authors of the Holy Bible, Luke and Matthew, wrote about this wonderful Christmas.  It tells us that Jesus Christ was born in Bethlehem to Mary and his adoptive father, Joseph.

According to popular tradition, this birth is said to have taken place in a stable, but according to the Bible it took place in a manger.  It is still located below the church in Bethlehem where Jesus was born.  An angel told the shepherds near the manger about the birth of Jesus.  Then they went to visit the baby Jesus and they were the first group to see him.  Christians believe that the birth of Jesus fulfilled the prophecies made many years before his birth.

Remembrance is one of the main ways in which Christians celebrate Christmas.  The Christian church engages in various religious activities during the preparation period, until the birth of Jesus.  Young children as well as older Christians perform plays commemorating the birth of Christ and sing Christmas carols.  ⁇

In every Christian home at this time, the cave where Jesus was born and the related characters are depicted in artistic images, and among these images the three kings who came to see Jesus also occupy an important place.  They followed the comet, known as the Star of Bethlehem, and offered gold, incense, and incense to Jesus.  Also different decorations can be seen this Christmas season.  Among these, the Christmas tree occupies a prominent place and is decorated with Christmas trees, light bulbs and ornaments.  This Christmas tree originated in Germany.

On Christmas Day, gifts are exchanged between family members, friends, relatives, and neighbors.  It symbolizes peace, happiness and love.

Thousands of worshipers from around the world attended the Christmas service at midnight on December 24 at the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem, one of the world's largest Christmas celebrations.

His Holiness Pope Francis also officiated at a Christmas Mass in the Basilica of Rome, Italy, at midnight on December 24, with more than 5,000 devotees in attendance, Vatican News reports.  His Holiness's Christmas message stated that kindness to the world is essential.  Foreign media point out that the Holy Father has filed his Christmas message focusing on epidemics, including wars and natural disasters around the world.
