-IDALGASHINNA MOUNTAIN-

Image
Thick fog clouds flow through the green mountains, creating amazing patterns.  It was only after 10 am when we reached the Idalgashinna station on the Kandyan Railway.  The foggy city disappeared.  The sky is clear.  There is also no severe cold.  Claiming the sweetness of a climate that changes from moment to moment, the city disappears.  There are two shops in the shop.  Below the railway station was the Government Tamil School.  Adjacent are rows of residential houses.  The post office was located on a slope upwards.              From Idalgashinna Station, 1615 meters above sea level, Mount Idalgashinna rises majestically behind Ohio.  From there we have to go another kilometer and another 300 meters to our destination.  We proceeded a short distance on the concrete paved road between the stalls and reached a gravel road near the Rural Bank.  The narrow road ends near a...

Deforestation in Sri Lanka

Image
Forests are essential for the survival of life on earth.  While forests provide habitat for millions of species, they play a vital role in improving the quality of the environment in which humans live.  At the same time, conservation of biodiversity, conservation of catchment areas of rivers, streams, etc., control of water cycle and soil cycle and maintenance of climate balance are important.  However, as human activities become more complex, deforestation is increasing day by day due to human intervention in the environment.  Furthermore, the factors that lead to destruction vary from country to country depending on the diversity of cultural, social and economic conditions.  Deforestation is one of the major environmental problems in Sri Lanka.  Forests play a major role in maintaining the carbon cycle.  Carbon dioxide is the main gas that contributes to the gre...

MUSIC

Image
MUSIC IS Music is a form of media sound.  The basic elements of music are the interplay (which controls the rhythm and melody), the rhythm (it is associated with the concepts of rhythm and harmony), the dynamics and tone, and the acoustic state of the texture.  The word is derived from the Greek word muses.  Music written before 1600 did not specify what instruments were needed to play it.  Those who composed music a century ago did not always specify which line should be harmonized or played by instruments.  It also did not always specify in which syllable the composed music should be played.  Rhythm dates back as far as 1200.  Therefore, speculation abounds among modern musicians playing medieval and Renaissance music.  Renaissance musicians, however, must have been specifically trained in bidirectional banding, and may have acquired the extras needed to read music. With the rise of music in the early 20th century, the re-creation of musi...

CHRISTMAS

Image
Catholics around the world celebrated the glorious birth of Jesus Christ yesterday (25). Christmas is celebrated not only by Christians but also by people of other religions as a cultural event.  It is a festival celebrated all over the world. About 7% of the total population of Sri Lanka worships in Catholic churches across the country on December 24 at 12 midnight and on the morning of December 25. The Chief Christmas Service of the Archdiocese of Colombo was held at 12.00 noon on December 24 at St. Anthony's Church, Mangroves, Moratuwa under the patronage of His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith, Archbishop of Colombo. Christmas, or the birth of Jesus Christ, is considered by Catholics to be a holy time that brings peace and happiness to all the world. Christians believe that Jesus, known as the Messiah or Chosen One, was born of a virgin named Mary.  The authors of the Holy Bible, Luke and Matthew, wrote about this wonderful Christmas.  It tells us that Jesus C...

ADISHAM BUNGALOW

Image
Adisham Hall, or Adisham Bungalow is a country house near Haputale, in the Badulla District, Sri Lanka. At present it houses the Adisham Monastery a congregation of St. Sylvester. The house was built in 1931 by an English aristocrat and planter Sir Thomas Villiers, former Chairman of George Steuart Co, a trading and estate agency based in Colombo. Sir Thomas was a grandson of Lord John Russell and descendant of the Dukes of Bedford. It was designed by R. Booth and F. Webster in Tudor and Jacobean style, on 10 acres (40,000 m2) of land. Adisham Hall played host to many prominent personalities of the colony until the retirement of Sir Thomas, after which it was sold to Sedawatte Mills. In 1961 it was purchased by the Roman Catholic Church and was subsequently converted to a monastery. The house is well preserved along with its period fittings and furniture, and is open to visitors. Sir Thomas was always aware of his responsibilities and thus was in touch with the directors at of Ge...
